will it be ok to use 2 60 gallon filters on either side of my 125 or will i have to buy the 125 filter???

always go bigger! ALWAYS
Example:
my 30g: 50g biowheel
my 75G: 75g biowheel + 125g canister filter
my 150: 2X 75g biowheel + 200g canister filter

My recommendation is two of the penguin 350(75 biowheel)

I have 2 XP3's on my 125. If I had to do it again, I'd have gotten 2 larger filters with more flow, maybe an XP4. It's nto as clear as I'd like it to be.

I was running both of them on my 30 gallon (talk about over-filtration) and it was unbelievably crystal clear.

what is being stocked in the 125g?
I say, redundancy and duplication is best. What kind of filter are the two filters that you have in mind? It seems to me the two filters of different types would be a good choice. Like a canister and a good mechanical filter like an AC110. I would still go bigger then what the manufacturer recommends for filter size.
Likewise, two (or three) heaters are better then one.

lets see.. we have a fluval 405, Emperor 400 and an Emperor 280 on the big tank (4 x 2 x 2). We have a fluval 405 and an Emperor 400 and a 50 gal aquaclear on the 100 gal tank. And on the 75 gal tank we have a fluval 405 and 2 large bubbling wands.. but no other filtration.

like everyone else said, over filtering never hurts..
