Hello MFK,
I just recently set up a 125, and i currently have 4 ac110's hanging off the back :nilly:
the electricity bill is kicking my ass :irked:

I was wondering if i could upgrade to anything more efficient?

If your saying FX5, then say fx5 + 2 ac110's for example to give me an idea of the complete setup

If your saying wet/dry then say the GPH pump i should be using, and the size of the sump. (this is probably the most energy efficient i would assume?

*Tank is not drilled*

Thanks in advance!

Obviously less motors running, or at least more efficient ones, are what you want. 1 big filter would solve that. Canisters are great, so are wet/dry sumps. If money is the issue, then build your own over the tank filter. With these you get maximum efficiency due to the low head pressure on the pump. I use a sump on top of my Oscar tank, along with a canister. I think my over-sump is doing more work with less energy. Best part was no tank drilling :)

As far as the electricity bill goes, it might not even be your 4 filters, although I'm sure its not helping the matter. Look into your hours of lighting, reduce to 8hrs/day. Look at your heater as well. If you keep the tanks heater at 80F and your house AC at 65F, then your heater will be running all the time, and its a big draw. I set my heaters to 78F and my house to 76F (I live in FL and I love the heat) and my heater comes on a few times a day, but only for a few seconds. Also, having a fan (ceiling fan maybe?) by the tank will lower the water temp, thus making your heaters have to work that much harder.

Good luck man. I hope you get it all straightened out!

Have you tried looking into a sponge filter? I run a Lustar ATI Hydro-Sponge Filter V in my 75g. It offers superior biological filtration, is easy to clean and the air pump needed to run it might be lower wattage than an AC110.

+1 on the sponge filter massively under rated. But also the over sumps work well and you can make it for cheap. If i remember eheim filters run on lower wattages then most.

i noticed after i put up that tank, my electric bill went up like $50. I live in hawaii, so i don't use a heater in that tank. The air conditioning is usually always off downstairs anyway, and theres no fan.

Could you explain more about the DIY over the tank filter? pics would be awesome!

I also dont really want a sponge filter in my tank, its right in the entryway, and i want to make it clean looking

Sure http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=342226 and theres lots more in the DIY filters section.

+2 on the sponge filter on the filter inlet. Massive difference in water quality... and extremely underrated.
