In my newly setup 125 gallon I have a rena filstar xp4 canister, marinlenad penguin bio wheel 350, marineland H.O.T. Magnum, then a aquaclear 50 poewr head for water circulation. My question is... Do I need all this filtration? I read that the xp4 is rated for a 260 gallon tank. So what is your opinion?

I'd dump the magnum. I'm not that up on marineland canisters but isn't that the one you can get a really fine cartridge to polish the water? If that is the model, I'd put it aside and greak it out once or twice a month for polishing only.

I usually go with the turning rate per hour, so add all of the GPH rate of your filters and divide it by 125 and see what you get...Not sure what is acceptable but i'd go 7 or up turning rate per hour.
I have 120gal with aquaclear 110 (500gph), aqueon 75(400gph), and fluval 405 ( i think 340gph) so approximately 1200gph divide by 120 so I have about 10 turns per hour.

Hope this helps.

The magnum is a H.O.B. Filter it does have the water polishing option but I hate the thing. I constantly have to prime the filter other wise air gets trapped inside and it makes a obnoxious splashing sound aswell as fills the tank with micro bubbles.

if you constantly have to prime your magnum, you have a leak somewhere. Or your intake for the magnum is sucking in air bubbles from somewhere. As far as filtration goes, the more you have the better off you are.
