I'm setting up a 125 g for a friend of mine who has never had fish before. If it was my tank I would have a 30g wet dry flowing at least 900gph. But it is not mine nor do I want to do any maintenance on it so I am l;ooking for some filtration opinions for easy maintenance. Fluval FX5 perhaps. I think he might do better with a canister because I can just picture him not cleaning the pads in a wet dry and flooding the house. What does everyone think?

I think he will have mostly SA cichlids

Well, remember with the wet dry, he will be able to SEE the pads pretty easy, so he may remember to change them more. Many people see the clean outside of the canister and never think about what it looks like inside.

2 Emperor 400 and a XP3 with a prefilter. If you really want to push the GPH then add another canister such as a Marineland C360 or another XP3 or Eheim 2028. Tell your buddy just rinse the canister prefilter so he does not have to mess with the canister too much. Keep things simple and easy for him since he's a noobie. Don't intimidate him with all the scientific crap about fish keeping.

I'll second the vote for a pair of E400's but forget the canister idea. no beginners going to servace it correctly. The E400 starts to over flow when it's time to change the filter pads and the location makes that a simple operation. The easier you make filter maintance...the more likely someone is to do it.

The bio-wheels can be left alone but with an Aqua Clear filter the whole media tray has to be taken out to clean...this leaves room for mistakes like cleaning ALL of the media and crashing the tank.
