I was planning to do a pond for my 14"-15" arowana, and I still am going to. However, thats being delayed and I don't think I'll get the chance for a few months. So I'm planning on upgrading to a 125 gallon sometime this week. The dimensions are 72"x18"x23". Personally, I think it's plenty big enough for a 14" arowana, but I just wanted to hear everyones opinions. Would the tank still be suitable by the time he is 18-19"? Again, I think it is fine, but I would like to hear everyones opinions.

i dont know munch about arowanas but i know they are long and you should always leave room for your fish to turn around in. So at 14" and a tank that is only 18" wide is cutting it close but fine. However, by the time the arowana gets to 17 inches, the 18" wide tank will be too small.

If you are going to upgrade just skip from 125 to 150. Most 150's come in the dimension of 5' by 2' by 2'. With a width of 24", a 150 will suit you well for a while and it will give you time to make a pond.

Are you sure he will be fine in a pond in miami, doesnt it still hit a low of around 50 degrees farenheit in winter there?

at least get a 180gal tank72x24x24 that will give you more time. otherwise your just wasting money. the pond is still needed though.

I totally agree..i believe for aros height of the tank is of not much consequence what matters is the length and width of the tank

Oh trust me I would go with 180 gallon, but I have to go with the ones I can find. If I find a 180 gal in those dimensions I'll definitely be buying it, but thats unlikely. Only thing I find are 125 gallons or 150s. He should only be in it for 4-5 months at most.

What type of Aro do you have? I've been reading up on the Aro threads recently because I have always wanted one. From what I've read, you can house a jardini in a 180 for life. While this is debated back and forth, most people will say it is doable.. maybe not IDEAL, but doable.

How quick do you plan on building a pond? In my experience, once you put you 14" aro in a 125 it will recognize the added space and have a growth spirt. I put mine in a 180 around 15" and it has grown 3" in 6 months. So you might have less time to build your pond than you think. Honestly, look real hard for a tank that is 24" deep/wide. Even a 60" length with a 24" depth will be better thank a 72" length and a 18" depth. I say no way on the 125gal! If your serious about building a pond and this will be a temporary tank......look on craigs list for a 150gal tank. Their are always deals. I bet i could look at the Florida listing right now and find a 150gal.

If you want to keep aros you have to follow peoples advice. Aros jump and smash their heads into glass when their tank is small. you don't want to lose the fish before you build its pond.

talk to your lfs they can order one in for you. in 4-5months your aro should be at least 20". i have raise many aros and i have had one go from 3" to 24" in 10 months. trust me go with the bigger tank. a 150 isn't worth your time because it isn't long enough. it makes a difference in aro behavior, your aro will be more jumpy in a smaller tank.

The 125g will give you a couple months but you really need something 24" wide once that aro hits 19-20"

get as big as you can. but if 125gal is all you can find atm, then get it, its better than us discouraging you from upgrading and not getting anything at all. GL finding a large tank though, you can try posting a WTB ad here or on craigslist.
