I have a newly cycled 125 gallon tank with nothing in it and looking to start fresh. I’ve tossed around the idea of a centerpiece aggressive fish but think I’d rather go with a oddball tank.

One thing I do want is some active fish. I’m okay with bichirs and such but I don’t want a gulper cat, Lima shovel nose…etc that mainly just sit in one spot.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

Bichirs on the bottom and toothy characins like freshwater cuda, hujeta , odoe pike etc on top?

I was actually thinking about that. Are they pretty active?
They kinda just cruise around unless eating or they get startled. Here’s a 180 I had with some of them, I had some of each, but it would be better with the hujeta or cuda to get a group of the same. If you went with an odoe, I would just get one but they can potentially outgrow your tank, so it could work but I’d go with a group of hujeta or freshwater cuda

I also had a Malawi barracuda here, not ideal with the characins but I did keep a pair with just bichirs and that was a pretty cool tank that also worked well for me

I always smile when someone does not want a catfish because they don’t move much but would go for birchirs 😜🤣

we have birchirs in every photo contest because they dont move much and are easy to get good photos of - or at least mine dont.

Oh I’m 100% okay with catfish. I just would want an oddball that is somewhat active.

Stock a uniquely oddball bottom feeder, then add a big group of psycho oddballs, who are hyper active swimmers, Exodons.
I've often been tempted to keep Exodons, but have always wimped out. Lol.
