With one sump you would want at least a 4'xs or more turnover rate. So approximately 500gph plus depending on height of tank. Best way to determine if you'll need more filtration is to test your water parameters and how clear do you want your water to be.

True, I could always set it all up and add HOB's later if need be. I would like to just run 1 filter (the wet/dry) if possible though. It will be stocked with African cichlids, pretty decent amount but nothing too crazy. I am planning on turning a 35-40 gallon tank into a wet/dry with 2 pumps rated at around 500gph @ 4' of head.
