Im moving into a new home and im gonna start up a new tank, and i want a wetpet on the predatory side. wolf fish look pretty cool but i not sure if theyre the right fish for the foot print of the tank 72x22x18. any other suggestion? no oscars or flowhorns or common cichlids please.

Dovii’s seem to be way to big for a 180.

If I were you, I’d go with a pair of smaller parachromis’ - maybe Motaguensis or Loiselli. They’re really beautiful, and although I’ve never kept them it’s something of a dream of mine.

A red wolf is a great wet pet, though can be done in a lot smaller of a tank.
I have no idea about the others, but if I recall a black is doable.
A fahaka puffer could also be a good option, though that may need more space as it grows.

You might be able to get away with a kelberi peacock bass. They have a listed max size of 18 inches, but it says they are usually closer to 14 inches.
Some others could include larger pike cichlid species like the Atabapo, Zebrina, Lenticulata, etc. Red Devil, or Green Terrors(hopefully these aren't too common)
Some more oddball ones could be a datnoid, a chalceus/characin of some sort, cow goby, some of the larger bichirs.
Not sure how well it'll work and it'd be tough to find, but a Gilled African Lung Fish could work.

i mean some of the ccihlid are common i like pikes but the ones i like are very pricey, but arent datnoid large growing fish and i feel the peacock bass may be ricky in a 125. the goby look cool i do like me a thick fisk why i was thinking a blakc wolf or something similar

Some datnoids get large, though a silver datnoid rarely exceeds 12 inches in captivity from what I could find.
If you're looking for something like a black wolf fish, then a wolf fish definitely works (black, red, etc.) as would a cow goby, a gulper catfish (although 125 is overkill, a 75 would be plenty big enough), lima shovelnose catfish, or a bullhead (maybe? Not exactly predatory compared to the others).

I think a gold wolf fish would be awesome, they’re sized right for a 6ft tank and very active. You could do just one or possibly a shoal of golds which would be pretty impressive. I was gonna suggest a fahaka puffer, but from my experience the 18” width is little small.
