The largest type is a cichlid. I would say you have a relatively varied choice in terms of which species you pick. Personally, with thos dimensions I would keep a pair of Jaguar cichlids. Although smaller, you could also keep a shoal of Pygo's.
 
Pygos reach around 12", Jaguars can reach 16". The largest Jag I had was 13", kept in a 5x2x2'. Was comfortable, although more space is always better.

I wouldn't suggest keeping a fish that is larger than 15" in that tank though, because it is relatively narrow. Still a pretty big fish though.
 
yeah very large.

i was looking at spotted gar, but they get too big it seems.

my tap water is pretty hard, which is why i've always kept africans, I was just looking to mix it up a bit
