hi all
how many hydor 4oo watt heaters should i be using on my 125 gal tank...i have 1 now but the temp wont go up above 78 degrees..even tho i have it set at 82 deg...i'm thinkin i should have 2 of them...to share the load...any takers?:)

400W you should only need 1. Some things may change or play a role in the temp drop like: Is the tank open, outside temp of the tank, or is the heater your using properly working and its it a quality heater. those are some things I would look at. I personally use a 300W heater and it is at times way more than enough.

Some brand heaters will never go to what u set it at, always 1 -2 degrees
lower for some reason. Normal I think. But 4 degrees? That might be a bad heater.

I think some heaters may have a 4 degree swing. Where is the temperature reading taken in relation to the heaters location ? Where is the heater located in general? Have you tried unplugging it and plugging it back in or turning it all the way up then all the way down then to the desired temp ? Sorry if this all seems obvious but I hope it helps. You should not need a bigger heater than 400 watts for a tank that size.

In have a 300watt of my 125 and it's at 82, with it set to high. I'm going to get another small one to share the load, but with a 400 that should be plenty. Sounds faulty.

sorry to keep adding but i had a 200 watt in with my 300 at first thinking it wouldnt keep the tank at 85 and for some reason the 200 didnt want to shut off when it was about 4" away from the 300. i saw a bright red glow and ran and shut it off. took it out and seen that the 300 was doing a fine job.
