Have a 125g coming soon, and I'd like to eventually have a breeding pair of bocourti in it. Is there enough room to keep pearsei as well? and perhaps one other big one.. such as an Oscar?

I'd likely start out with a group of bocourti juvies until a pair formed, and 2-3 pearsei so I could choose a favourite..

I originally wanted a single Argentea with the bocourti and pearsei but from posts below.. it looks like that would be a big mistake.

Likely add a few clown loaches, and perhaps a striped raphael

A breeding pair of bocourti on their own in a 125 would be tight IMO - they grow over a foot in length and are pretty active/feisty. You would be able to keep others in the tank during the grow-out phase, but eventually you'd have to re-home the others if your bocourti pair up.

That tank is filling up real quick, lol

Pearsei and Bocourti are very large bodied fish and fill up a tank very quickly. Not enough room to add a third wheel large fish in there, in my opinion.

My vote would be for a breeding Pearsei pair... you can tell by my avatar I am partial to Pearsei.

Thanks guys, the trick is going to be finding the fish.. ya don't see pearsei or bocourti around here. Likely will need a drive across the border to find them.

Anyways, ok if I go with just the pair of bocourti (or pearsei), would they tolerate a small group 3-4 rainbow cichlids and some swordtails?

You may do well with either pearsei or bocourti for a while with those tankmates.
As long as you're aware they get large and will make a 125 gal tank appear to be a 10 gal.
I have had both species in the past, and have bocourti now, and they needed to be moved from my 150 gal to a 300 gal at just under 3 years.
I got the ones I have now, at about 2" a year and half ago, they are now pushing 8", and plan on moving them to a 300 gal within 6 months or so.

I'm in Toronto, I have found a single bocourti but I'm a month away from having the tank ready so not sure he will still be available. Ideally though I'd rather start with a small group so I can get a pair. It has taken months to find any local...

I went throught the same craziness looking for bocourti bet ended up with a pearsei. Ignore my pm since I dont think you wanna drive to nj lol.

Cichlids of americas and cichlid connection both have bocourti. Aquascapeonline has pearsei not sure if they ship to canada though
