I have a 125gallon tank with 2 fluval fx4 canister filters. The tank is fully cycled. I was curious on those who run dual canister filters in a 6ft tank how they run the intakes and outputs on their tanks. What works best for optimal filtration. My water is very clear and test perfectly. I currently have to two outputs toward the center faced straight ahead and up just to brake the surface for good surface agitation. And the two intakes about 3 inches from each rear corner. Should I swap them around and have the intakes in the middle and both outputs in the back corners faced 45 degrees towards the front middle glass?

If that's SAND, you better be putting on some good "PRE-FILTERS" or you'll have impeller problems before you know it. FX4/FX6's are great (I have 3) but SAND and FX's DO NOT MIX.... The impellers are expensive as well.

Just an FYI....

When you say prefilters what exactly are you meaning? Sorry I’m just getting into these canister filters. Thanks for the info I appreciate it

Would a filter media bag work over the intake. They are rather large intakes I didn’t know of any sponge to use. Thanks again

I’m not sure if there’s any available prefilter for the FX more than likely you’d have to DIY. Honestly you could avoid the whole entire prefilter thing if you just move your intake higher maybe 2”-3” higher than you have it now. Midtank works too I see you have Powerheads it’ll help pick up the debris.

Plus any form/type of prefilter will need to be maintained and cleaned every so often otherwise it’ll clog and dramatically reduce the flow on your filters

Okay I will move them up tonight and thanks for the advice. Don’t want to ruin $600 in filtration lol

I run three canisters on my 150. I prefer to have the intakes on the left and right then position the exit in the middle. Get a big pond foam and cut to fit the fx intake or move the intake up.

And to the OP

That is a good looking tank setup, KUDOS! ;)

One OTHER thing about using "Pre-Filters". Even though I DON'T have sand, I have a 12+inch Male Amph (Midevil) that LITERALLY picks up normal size aquarium gravel on one side of the tank, and PURPOSELY swims over to the INTAKE of the FX6, and dumps it. I SWEAR he does his DAMDEST to try to break this filter, and any other one I have on his tank. Thats but ONE of the reasons why I use a prefilter.

Thats the thing with 'lil monsters, these fish are SMART, and you will find, sometimes CONNIVING!!!

Large Cichlids you will find are generally a LOVE/HATE relationship, but dam they're interesting when they're not purposely trying to BREAK something or KILL a tank mate....LOL

Hope you learn to enjoy them too, but, there WILL BE PAIN I assure you(and that for some of us means getting BITTEN regularly). o_O And uhhh, YES it hurts....:(
