Ok so I've been trying to set up a 125 gal tank for 6 weeks now. I'm finally getting to the point where I can start putting fish in it and I want an ornate bichir. Ive been doing research online and have found people claiming 75g is good enough all the way up to no less than a 6 foot 300g tank.So my question is with a 60 x 18 inch foot print to what size can I keep an ornate before I move it? Thanks in advance.

ideally you want a footprint that is 24 inches wide or so. the idea is the width be wider then the ultimate length of the fish so it can turn around without issue.

Everybody will have a different opinion. Imo an ornate would be happy with that footprint up to 12-14inches. Even a little longer if you wanted to push it a little before moving to a different (larger) tank size.

125 will be great for the ornate, I currently have one in a 70 and he's doing great and growing at a good pace. as long as its wide and long, you really don't want to have any sort of bichir in a tall tank, it'll be fine. and if you think it will get longer then the width of your tank eventually, upgrade

Thanks guys that was kinda the way I was thinking. I know I will need to upgrade at some point. My concern is how long of a fish I could comfortably support. I was hoping to be able to get away withit till the fish hit 14-15 inches. Any thoughts?

I think it'd be fine @ 14-15in, pushing it a little but I think it'll be ok. What size did you plan on upgrading to?
Oh and how big are you gonna buy it at? I know you can get them at pretty small sizes some times that'll give you some time

in an ideal world it will be 72-84x30x30 though more realistic 72x24x24. As for its size the ones I have seen are 6-8 inches so I figure i'have some time before I need to move him.

i'd think that if you know you are going to upgrade that the 125 would be an amazing grow-out tank. However not every ornate breaks the 18" mark especially the CBs nowadays seem to stay around the 12"-16" mark (thats not an excuse to not upgrade), but in order to keep your fish happy i'd go ahead and say that he's gonna get to the 24"+ mark, because if it does (it will probably stop around 20"-24" if it does get to that size) you will be prepared, if it doesn't then you will have a nice big space for it. As far as upgrading i'd think that you'd want to start looking for an upgrade around the 10"-12" mark, because most times tanks that big tank some time to plan out and get the money for all the supplies etc.., that will go into the tank.

the 125 would be good for a long time. You can keep it in that tank for 2 or so years. Maybe more. If it's CB, you could keep it in that tank for life. If it's WC might need to upgrade faster.

my opinion:

CB: 125 gallon
WC 200 gallon.

Thanx for the input. Dr.B. I hope he hits the 24" mark cause that would be one heck of a poly . I'll have to ask the next time I'm at the Lfs I was planning to get him from to see if there wc or cb. That may very well determine if I get one or not. Dels stay a bit smaller right? If not I like the senes too. That way I wont have to rush the setup of the upgrade tank. Always better to take your time. Anyway thanks again.
