Need some more advice... I came across a 125g tank but it has no cross-brace at the top. It doesn't appear that it ever had one at all. Is this going to cause a problem with bowing? Is there any way I can put a cross-brace in, or do I even need to? I don't want to set this thing up for disaster.

I had the same problem with one I bought. I ordered the brace from my LPS or from pet solutions I think. You will need the brace.

Older tanks were designed and built without cross braces. I would do a test fill and see how much it bows if any.

How long do you suppose I should let it sit with a test fill before determining that it's safe?

I guess I should also add that the glass is 0.5" thick.

first you need to determine if it bows or not, if it does not bow then it is probably fine to use. If it bows then something should be done.

hello. i think that it is a problem.... if not now down the road. buy new trim and reseal it or buy a new tank. you dont want over a 100 gallons on your floors someday.

If it is old school with 1/2" glass, it probably was built without a center support. I have a 90g like that. I bought it off of craigslist and was skeptical because it had no center support. I filled it up in the back yard and let it stand for 3 days---no leaks or bowing. Drained it out and put it in the house.. Been up and running for months now with no issues.

Old tanks are built without brace. Unless its been removed/depending on builder you can check for a sticker with the date it was built, but if its 1/2" its probably old-style. If you can, ask if the tank has been resealed a lot of old tanks have been resealed- from my experience. If you want to be safe, you could do a test fill outside... oh, and tanks like this are HEAVY.

Brian is correct. Older tanks did not have one. According to you it never had one. So it is not like something is missing. I would fill it up.
