i have a 125 thats im puttin my 3inch gt into but want to know what else would work well with him. the tank is 72x18x23

GT's rule, I friggin love them, but their temperment is all over the board. On average I would say they are moderatley aggresive, and will allow other inhabitants for the long haul. You would probably be ok with a Jack Dempsey, Texas Cichlid, Salvini, Convicts. Some Silver dollars as dithers always work, and I'm sure other will give you some good ideas...If this is going to be long term and plan on having all the fish as adults, I would stay away from Jags, Dovii's, and Red Devil's, they just become to brutual...
other choices for dithers could be giant danios or a medium to large rainbow species. I really want to eventually get a school of millenium rainbows to keep with some of my larger cichlids. I'd go with a green terror, jack dempsey and a carpintis and then a big school of dithers. 
I'd go with a mixed SA/ CA tank... Or a breeding pair of festae. They would be NICE.

You really have a lot of choices here. Do you want other cichlids or non-cichlids? Color preferences? You'd probably have better luck if you went through some species profiles (aquariacentral.com has a pretty extensive profile section) and narrowed down to some fish you like, then came back to see if they'd be a good fit for your tank.
so far in the tank i have three 1" firemouths and cons and my 3" gt. i think next i am gonna add like 6 silver dollars. should i stop there or any other ideas?
