I am new to this saltwater thing and have a chance to pick up a standard 125g glass tank with a very nice cherry stand with hood and enclosed in the hood is 3x 400w blue line metal halides with blue line ballasts as well as 2 72" flouresent fixtures all attached to a reflector.

The halides alone are 1200w. Thats 9.6wpg. That will fry any LPS or zoas/palys you put in there unless you have it like 4 feet off of the tank. Even then you still risk bleaching any corals you put in it. Thats just the halides. Then your adding probably another 200w with the T-5's. Not to mention the energy cost of running that thing. So the answer to your question is yes, thats too much light. Should shoot for like 7-8wpg at the most. That will grow anything. Might still be a little much for LPS though ao you would have to play with diatance between the light and the tank
