We're moving in August and I will finally have a finished basement on a concrete slab. I am looking to get something 125g or greater. We SCUBA dive and my wife is pretty stoked about a marine tank. I would love to have a triggerfish myself, but there are some really cool freshies that I would like to do at this size.

What would you do for a 125g or bigger (depends on the deal) display tank?

Who has the best deals on big tanks? craigslist? glasscages? anybody else?

Thanks,
-C

I've bought 2 of my tanks from people on Craig's List. I purchased the 3rd tank from a person advertising in the local newspaper's classified section. Ebay is another option.

If you want to do a reef, width seems to give the best effect. I personally don't like the way reefs look in tanks that are relatively narrow for their size (30L, 55, 125 etc...). I think a smaller scale reef in a breeder size tank looks better than in a 125 just because it appears more 3D. I think a 120 or a 180 or something odd sized from glass cages could make a nice reef tank.

You guys seem to have your hearts set on marine though, and I am sure you could pull something pretty cool off in a 125.

As for the best deal, craigslist is the way to go for standard tanks. Where I live you can get a new 125 with lids and lights for 300 twice a year at the LFS where I work. Here, they tend to go for the same (or more lol) on CL. 125s are definitely the cheapest large tank IMO. Anything else you will probably have more trouble finding used and have to buy new.

Fresh is cheaper overall but marine looks "better" some would say. I personally prefer fresh for larger tanks and marine for smaller.

I would personally do FW....

...but if money and time were not a problem for me, I would go SW.

if it was marine I'd probably do an aggressive FOWLR with triggers, tangs, puffers, and a moray eel.

if FW i'd probably do SA/CA cichlids or maybe an aro/rays if sufficiently big.
