I want to build a 125 stand using plywood amd 4x4. looking at the construction of my all glass 120g I am over building.

This will be a black "industrial" style stand.

I want to use a sheet of 3/4 ply 72x19 for the top and bottom. and then six 4x4 evenly spaced with metal support brakets. I want the plywood bottom to distribute the weight more(tank will be over a crawl space)

are the top and bottom enough or does there need to be a 2x4 ring?

If everything was perfectly square, and the floor was perfectly flat and level, it would be fine. But in the real world, if you're just butting the ends of the 4x4 against a sheet of plywood, I don't think it gives you enough rigidity to prevent the top from flexing, especially if you have to do alot of shimming.

I would build the whole thing out of 2x4, the plywood isn't even necessary. Just build a top frame, a bottom frame, and sandwich vertical supports between them, doubled up in the corners.

I agree. Go with something similar to what is pictured below. it will be a lot cheaper as well.

check out my photo album "150 stand build" you're stand would be complete by 5th picture...as stated before 2x4's are plenty

nice job guys but im going for something alittle more minimal. almost swedish/mid century.

the bottom half of this stand is really what I want. the ply base is to spread the weight going on an off grade floor within 4 feet of a 120wide.

how about if the top frame is 2x4 or 2x2 with ply ontop and the bottom just ply? the above pic claims to have held a 150-120-and 2 40's on the bottom.

That would work, standard LFS tank stands are built without 2x4s, but you really should just follow the drawing supplied. This is a sturdy enough design that will allow you to shim it and get it level on the un-level floor.

ok I know I am beating a dead horse here. What would it take to do a stand for a 125long with only 4 posts? I really like the look and I have some left over 6x8's. 4 6x8's with the top and bottom frame lag bolted on? top frame and bottom frame would have a cross brace ever 12 inches made of 2x4.
