So i work at Petsmart and in the back is a 125 Wide 72 x 24 x 17 Tall tank. has 3 class lids and one has shattered inside and the stand is beat up a little, scratched pretty bad. I spoke with my manager and he said he would prob cut me a $200 deal on it. Im THINKING about making a Discus fish tank or a Cichlids tank. I dont know much about Discus fish but ive been reading things. I 'plan' on havening it remain bar bottom and add some stuff to it. Any ideas? ill prob do one of those threads showing it before, during and after. I also thought about selling the tank but im thinking when i get it home i wont want to part with it.

I think 125g is a good size for jardinis right? If so, get one of those.

Jardinis is like an Arowana? I looked on cregs list and i got a message from a girl what would like to do an even trade for a 130 we have is 36 x 24 x 36 tall but i really dont know how i would reach the bottom of the tank.

Thats not a good trade. Stick with your tank. 200 is an okay price if it comes with a stand and the lids. Do you know if it holds water?

Pick the most scratched up side for your back and paint it black.

Get a shop light from Home Depot and grab a heater from your work. One 300 Watt will work fine. If you have some cash get an overflow from glass-holes.com (about $70 with the drill bit) and build your own sump.

I would go with a submersible pump, some kind of tupperware water proof bucket/container. Some media, and some kind of disposable mechanical filter padding and your all set. I bet you can get this tank up and running for $400 total.

I might do that, i haven't ever setup a sump tho. Im 99% sure it holds water. I replaced some of the screws and added 4 new handles for the doors, so it looks better. Still need a new lid tho. I thought about putting an unhinged piece of glass in the middle. I decided to not trade it, i really dont want to part with it so ill prob try to hold onto it tell we get a larger apt or my gf breaks and lets me fill it up. What would be better, discus or Cichlids? or something else?

I would recommend African cichlids, but I am biased :P. A colony of frontosa would be nice. I enjoy discus as well (btw also cichlids your question should really be what type of cichlids you want). I find discus much more picky about water parameters (hardness, ph) than are most other cichlids. Unless you have naturally soft low ph water Africans or other south americans are probably a better bet than discus.

FYI on the tank if it is beat up not too bad $200 may be an ok price, but at least in my area I can get used tanks that size with stand/filters/heaters for $150 with minimal waiting on craigslist; even cheaper if willing to constantly check for a couple of weeks. I know in some parts of the country seems the prices always go a lot higher though so maybe not the same where you are.
