Because I can't afford to buy a fx5 or an eheim pro. What would be a good filtration system that would give me something 600+gph for a 125g aquarium of large cichlids . I know aquaclear 110s r cheap and efficient, but they look cheap(I know you get what you pay for so save the insults).

AC110 is far from cheap (in that they don't perform), they are very good filters. To be honest, a DIY Wet/dry would be your cheapest option and if you browse the site or youtube, you can get some ideals.
Could anyone tell me if it would be inexpensive to build my own sump filter system or maybe a thread that could lead me in the right direction??
dude, i might try two or three submersibles just to get buy, but really a canister is your best bet.

Here is a very helpful thread on making your own wet/dry filter. If you are careful you could probably make one for around $100 including the pump. You could substitute a Rubbermaid tub for the glass tank, use pot scrubbies for your bio-media, and and pick up a used pump off of Craigslist.
