so i am woundering if my fluval 405 will be good enough on my 125 for a ray, or shoudl i drill and do a sump?

I doubt that a single 405 will be enough. If the ray is alone in there, you could probably just add an AC110 & be done with it. If you have other fish in with the ray, I would probably add another canister instead, if you want to keep it simple. A sump would be even better, but that requires a lot more work & plumbing, whether you drill it or go with a PVC/HOB overflow.

i agree with deaths sting, a sump would be best but if your set on a canister then i would suggest a single or twin Fx5.
im running a 405 on the tank in my sig and the flow barely cuts it. overall its a good filter and bio is fine for me but i would not add it to anything above a 3ft tank knowing what i know now.
