I am new to keeping cichlids but i have an awesome 125gal with a 6" flowerhorn female. I think its female. I have five 4" blood parrots. Not sure if males or females. Two salvini i believe both female. One 12" bichir. Two 4" african damaso cichlids. I have 1 more flowerhorn that i beleive is a male. He is quite a bit smaller and he hangs out at the top or in the corners. There is next to nothing as far as aggresion goes. I also have six convicts from fry size to 2". All the fish get along great. But they are all youngsters. Im curious how long this will last. Does any of those fish have a chance at successful breeding?. I have awesome caves. Lots of hiding places. Live plants and plenty of swim room. I have 2 canister filters running. My water quality stays great. My main fear is the bichir getting hungry and eating my equity fish. Or the fish getting too big and become more territorial.

Flower horns are gonna be a problem as they grow. More often than not they have to be kept alone.
As for breeding, if there are convicts, there will be breeding, whether with other convicts or hybridization.

When you have breeding, you have cichlids that get pinned to a small amount of space in the aquarium, and eventually high nitrates. Say goodbye to those live plants with the cichlids around. Good luck.

It might sound dumb because im new but arent higher nitrates good for plants? Also, do you not change water if there is breeding going on?

Somewhat higher is good for plants, but you still don’t want it too high, cause it is bad for fish that way.
You can change water around breeding, though I would avoid it while there are eggs if you want the best chance for success.

Plants first consume ammonium and then nitrates. Nitrates affect the development of both the fish and developing fish eggs. Decide if you want a fish tank or planted tank.

You can change the water if there is breeding. You just have to be smart on how to do it, like matching the temperature and dechlorinating prior to introduction into the tank.
