Hi
Over the last few days I have started to see plenty of movement in the back of one of my motoro females. What a feeling!
The female will be 13months old on the 30th of this month. So she is much younger then most of the articles and posts that I have read. She is a minimum of 12" disk, probably closer to 13". I wouldn't think she would be carrying too many pups at this size.
A couple questions. I'm sure they have probably been asked before, but I'm excited.
The tank is an 8x3x2.5 with 3F 1M motoro a couple pbass and some big archer fish. The tank is currently divided, one of the other girls is in a 3x2 compartment to heal up as the male was belting her... the girl that is knocked up showed relatively little damage in comparison to the divided girl who also looks like she may be knocked up (no movement yet) but very 'tall'.
My divider doesn't go to the bottom of the tank as it rests on the internal bracing. So the big rays can't get through the 1" gap at the bottom but I reckon a new born pup would slip through no problem.
My questions;
Will the pups be safe if i miss the birth? I have a cycled tank ready to move them too.
With breeding relatively young girls, will this slow their growth? I have had experience with malawis breeding at a young age, and their growth was always compromised... but this may have been partially due to the limited food intake while holding in comparison to rays who pig out when carrying.
What sort of numbers can I expect? 1 - 4ish? is this about right?
Is this just about a new record on MFK? I know another Aussie breeder, his actually gave birth at 12months.
I'll grab a pic of the knocked up girl when I get a minute.
Cheers
