135 gallon filter??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah the new multistages from marineland look promising. I used the mag 350's and they did a fine job for me. I used to have an old fluval 303 and it licked *%#^%# but i got a 304 and it was suprisingly better. After that I switched over to Eheim. I think I am now going to go and get me a Fluval 405 or the New c-360 Multistage from Marineland. I wonder why there isn't much talk about them any where I go or on any forums?

Not out long enough I guess...I hated the hoses even with the quick disconnects on the mag's but they did a great job for a LOT of years. The only reason I havn't picked one of the new ones up yet is that I have so many 405's around here and all the spare parts. Plus...now I'm working on the bigger tanks and I need something with the capacity of the FX5. and yes I know the pro3's are REALLY nice but I can buy 3 FX5's for what one costs...

oops...sorry didn't mean to derail the thread but we WERE talking filtration after all....

My 150G currently just has 2 XP3s running on it....and is doing wonderfully even with a rather hefty bioload. I do plan to add a XP4 or maybe a big powerfilter or two...sometime in the next month or two. I personally hate Emporer powerfilters...they are harder to access and work with than alot of other filters Ive used, and th eones ive used have had their share of problems as well.

I've recently been upgrading my filters on the 125 and 180 and I love the FX5. In fact, I'm waiting for Fed x to deliver another one. Check Ebay for a vendor called Monster-Pets, just picked up an FX5 for 195.00 including shipping.

So now I run an FX5's for Mechanical filtration and XP3's for bio. I consider my tanks a high bio load and my fish have never been happier.:headbang2

I'm all about over stocking and over filtering, so far I've stayed away from the dark side, the DIY W/D.:naughty: Once I go larger than a 180 AGA there's no other choice, I feel.

you think 2 xp3 would keep it clean?

yes. remember that the Rena's (and the other big canisters) have TONS of room for filter media, so this makes a big difference.

you can't compare a cartridge filter like an emperor with a big canister. the difference in terms of volume of media alone is just too great.

its like night and day, IMO.

Personally, I am partial to the combo of an AquaClear 110 and a Rena XP3

or, even better, 2 Rena XP3's.

I am not a fan of cartridge filters like the emperors.

just not enough media capacity for big bioloads that come along with big tanks, IMO.

I with 12v man here. I run 2 AC110s and a xp3 on my 180 gallon tank. I like the biowheel filters but the mechanical filtration is very poor, and really should only be used on smaller tanks.

Think about it you can have 500gph running through a 10" x 4" x 4" foam sponge with an AC110 or 400gph through 2 thin filter pads with the Emp 400.

With the 2 AC110s I rinse the sponges on a weekly basis, in warm tap water, they are for mechanical filtration. I have my xp3 setup for biofiltration in this way, Fluval prefilter, coarse foam, fine foam and a mix of Eheim ehfisustrat and Seachem Matrix, this filter is cleaned every 6-8 weeks.

I would've run a wet/dry sump instead of the xp3 but the one I setup was to noisy for the wife(my 180g is in our bedroom).

i would say any 2 canisters really. for a couple reasons. 1) far more media capacity for large tanks than HOBs. 2) the tank can fit flush or almost flush against the wall and save some extra space.

I've been looking into it as well. Here is the link to the users that have review it. So far the reviews ranked the filter as high as a Eheim. http://cichlidforum.com/reviews/view_product_review.php?id=1169

Now I cannot decide if I should get Eheim 2028 or Marineland C-360.

Go eheim for now as it will last you 20 years. The C-360 haven't been around long enough for anybody to know the lifespan. I think they have been out for 8-12 months not sure. Still they may be as good as Eheims now but what about 5 years down the road. Eheims will always be they same for around 15 years then they will start to crap out slowly.
