135 gallon filter??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well i heard xp3 leaks unrelible an overrated an it felt poorly made ..........................................................................................................option 4 is out

I have to agree with Cory on this one. I've personally seen several Rena filter failures and have cleaned up after a couple more. The custmer servace also left a LOT to be desired. A good friends LFS told me the return rate on Renas is almost 4 times that of other cannisters. One of the petsmart's managers confermed this as well.

Don't get me wrong here...if you have one and it's working well then more power to you. Unlike a lot of people here I don't brand bash..."This or that's CRAP" but rather post my opinions and the REASONS for them. I don't belive that "I heard that.....sucks" is a valad reason.

well, a well known plant forum that I visit has a 32 page thread about Eheim users converting to Rena's :)

even on this board, they are highly regarded.

So, I am surprised that you heard they are so crappy..

Eheims, Rena's and AC's are great filters.

cartridge filters are a step below by media chamber design alone IMO.

but which ever you choose, enjoy your new tank!

well you know ive been reading reviews on the eheim 2217 an i think thats what i want along with 2 ac 110s but if anyone can think of a better reason to get 2 emps with super cartridges instead dont hesitate to tell me.:)

Everything has it's place depending on your set up and brand bashing is a waste of time. The reason I use the Emporers is that I set up my cannisters....405's and FX5's as mechanical filters. I do this because it's possible to remove finer particles with a sealed pressure system like a cannister than with any other type.

The Emporers equipped with a supercartrage provide biological filtration unmatched even by the large canisters. The differance in space not withstanding. Even though I don't use them primarilly for mechanical filtration
the cross flow design of the cartrage type filters works very well although it requires cleaning more
often.

This however is a good thing because the job of mechanical filtration is to remove junk from the aquarium before it has a chance to break down and need the bio filter. This CAN'T happen if the junk stays in the filter (still in the filter...still in the water...thus increasing the bio load.) so a large capacity is not the answer to effective mechanical filtration.

My other problem with the AC filter design is that garbage collects UNDER the filter sponge and it's almost impossible to clean out a 110 without dumping at least a third of what youve removed back in the tank. The only way I've found to do it is to remove the unit entirly and this takes WAY too long so tends not to get done.

Like I said before I don't go by what I've heard but rather what I've expieranced. I asked questions about Rena filters to a couple of LFS managers I trust because I know of several failures personally.

well i dont have the filter but its just what i heard i havent heard on bad thing about the eheim or the new marine land..

Eheims a re very reliable I do however have a 2026 proII that leaks, but only when the power is off. Also eheims seem to have a slower flow rate which make them lack in mechanical filtration.

The 2217 is a great filter, comes with media too. I spent almost as much to set my xp3 with the same media. Go with the AC110s as your primary mechanical filtration. The foam sponges are easily rinsed. I rinse the two I have on my 180 once a week and the water is crystal clear no floaties whatsoever, so I don't even need to run any of that micro filtration media. The are also some biomax rings that come with the AC110's which will also add some bio filtration. Wolf is right about the collection of debree at the bottom on the AC's to combat this, once a month during W/C just siphon out the water from the AC filter, this is much easier then the monthly tear down cleanings I do on my Emps.

I'll have to remember the siphon trick although...if its all the same I'll use a small transfur pump...I'm not sucking a hose connected to that....LOL
