I will be obtaining a 135 gallon tank with dimensions of 72" X 18" X 24" here in a week or so. I want to make this a freshwater tank with a sump filtration system. I have a 90 gallon that is a little over a week from being done cycling. I want to make the 90 a severum breeding tank. It will house 1 pair of mated severums (I will buy 6-8 of them until they pair up, keep the best looking pair and then sell the other pairs/singles). I will be housing geophagus tapajos, clown loaches, angelicus loaches, a single green severum and a single blue acara in the 135 gallon tank.

So given this knowledge, what size sump should I look at getting? I will be building my own stand with a decently sized cabinet underneath the display tank location. Would a 30, 40 or 50 gallon sump work best? I could go a tad bigger, but I don't want to go much higher because I have equipment and supplies to store in the cabinet as well.

Make the sump as big as you can. In the end, you should max out the filtration. Think about it, the amount of electricity use by the return pump is the same if you use a 20 gal sump vs a 60 gal sump so why not get the bigggest you can fit in the stand?
Don't forget to make the stand openings big enough so you can remove the sump if you need to. You can do that by making a opening or door on the side of the stand. Also make the front doors wide for better access when services.

Okay. Makes sense. Anyone have any step by step directions for making a freshwater sump from an old aquarium? I have seen a few and they look easy enough. The only problem I face is getting the plumbing (PVC) set up and understanding how it functions so that I can set it up properly and know how to maintain it.
