I was going to get a fx5 but then realized that 300+ for a filter is too much for me to spend on a filter. I am going to build a wet/dry sump I have done a lot of searching but I still have some questions.

What size wet/dry would you guys/gals recommend for a 135 gallon tank? I know bigger is better, but what would be the ideal size? It will be the only means of filtration. I may put a ac 110 on it, but I would like a recommendation without taking account of the ac 110.

I plan on using a 1.25 inch overflow about 937.5 gph and 1.25 return. What gph pump should I get that is good quality?

Here is the possible stock list:
1 x Jack Dempsey (Rocio octofasciatum)
1 x Texas Cichlid (Herichthys cyanoguttatus)
2 x Firemouth (Thorichthys meeki)
1 x Salvini Cichlid (Cichlasoma Salvini)

Anywhere from 30-55 gallons would be a good size (I say 55 because they are commonly available used.) As for the pump, look for anything with a max. GPH of about 1000 gph at zero head, as it won't keep up that much flow after it goes up about 5 feet of piping.

Thanks for the input. I don't think I have enough room in my stand for a 55. There are a lot of people on CL that are selling 30-40 so I was hoping that would be adequate. What would be a good pump brand?

55 gal tanks are easy to come by at a good price... with that fact in mind I think a 55 gal is the 'right choice' for your 135 gal...

I made my sump out of a 50G storage tote I found at Lowe's for $20. I don't think you are going to get 900+ gph out of 1.25 overflows. I was just getting that flow using 2-1.5" bulkheads granted they were gravity fed which does make a difference. Just make sure of your flow before you commit to a pump.
