I acquired a 135g Oceanic drilled tank and stand a while back. We recently moved into our new home and I will be setting this tank up when I finish my basement office.

My question in regarding the stand itself, and its ability to hold the weight of a 135 and canopy.

The stand is built with a 28" 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" wooden post in each corner, and then a 1-1/4" x 1-1/4" in the center of the front, and 2x 1-1/4"x 1-1/4" posts in the back (see pics)

I don't know much about construction and the compression strength of lumber, but I know how heavy the 135 is empty, and it will be >1200 lbs when all is said and done.

Should I put a 28" 2x4 in each corner to be safe, am I being paranoid? Thanks in advance.

Those stands always look like it’s not enough, but I personally don’t know anyone who’s had a factory built stand fail (that wasn’t damaged previously somehow). If it’s not water damaged or damaged from moving, it’ll hold. But it’s not going to hurt to reinforce it with a few 2x4’s if you’re worried. For $10-12 you can triple the current supports.

Thanks for the reassurance, I will likely do that.

Would the best method of reinforcement be just to stick a 28" 2x4 on each of the 4 corners and then attach along the sides of the existing beams with some wood glue and deck screws?

If it were me and I was reinforcing it, I’d make a 2x4 base and lip inside the existing stand that was screwed Into the old one. Then but 21” (subtracting 3.5x2) as supports. If that makes sense. But again, I’m not sure any of this is needed.
