Hey Guys,

I was about to get a 135g made. I currently have a 60g that hosts some African cichlids.

I was hoping you guys can help me out with some stocking options for my new 135g. Here are a few options I had in mind -

(1) a pair of dovii or umbee
------------------OR--------------------
(2) 1 texas, 1 Jaguar, 1 black nasty

My tank dimensions are: L-50in, H-24in, W-26in

If there are any other variety of parachromis that you can suggest, I'm open. But I am definitely interested in the parachromis variety.

Thanks a ton!

dovii and umbee get very large and are super aggro and active. wouldnt be a great fit for your tank. im waiting on my 300 gallon tank, if it ever happens, before i try umbees.

any of your option 2 fish will work imo.

parachromis loiselli are a smaller growing variety of parachromis. also, grammodes cichlids are commonly referred to as mini dovii due to their similar look and behavior but are considerably smaller growing.

theres also the red tiger motaguense, which i have no experience with but apparently grows to around a foot.

good luck!

Option 1 will not work long term for a single adult, especially for a pair.

Option 2 will be fine with the Texas (plus dithers), and might be okay for the jag, not so sure for the black nasty.

Other parachromis that stay smaller than a jag are motaguense, losielle, and I believe friedrichstalli (sp?).

If you want something that has similar color like a black nasty, and will do fine as a single fish (maybe dithers), then a single male cuban cichlid.

Black Nasty are not in the parachromis family they are from Haiti but in a 135 best you can do is a grommade pair mini dovis or a pair of Texas jags needs to be solo or as other suggested the freddies or losielle.

Personally i would go with a pair of RTM. females are so pretty in full breeding dress

Hello,
I think you are over-estimating the size of the tank, or under-estimating the cichlids you've named. Not trying to rain on your parade, but hoping to save you some headaches down the line.
The pair of dovii or umbee will not work out permanently in the 125. The fish just get too big for the tank. And the females will have nowhere to run from a much larger male.

The community of the three species you stated, I can't see working out in that size tank long term. Any one of those, as an adult male, will dominate a 50" tank by themselves.
I think that you could keep any parachromis except for a dovii in this tank if you wanted a single male. But I would not expect it to share the tank with other cichlids. Non-cichlid tankmates such as catfish or silver dollars may work out.

If you wanted to keep multiple cichlids in this tank long term, I think you'll have to go for some smaller ,less aggressive varieties.
