14.5” Oscar

I picked up a new Oscar from what has become my favorite local fish store today. It does have a HITH crater on its head. I’ve ordered metroplex, focus and vitachem to arrive tomorrow and start treatment. This is the biggest Oscar I have ever owned and for now at least while medicating, I am going to keep it by itself in this 180 gallon. Eventually I may move it to a 280 that is 6’ x 30” x 30” where it will either be the only fish or lightly stocked.

Anyways, if anyone has any recommendations to help me with treating the HITH, I am all ears.

Although meds might help, unless you hold nitrates to below 5 ppm with lots of water changes, HITH usually reinfects after meds are discontinued.

Please don't take this comment as anything other than genuine intrigue. I have for decades now heard people talking about monster oscars like these, i.e. 14"+. I have yet to see one properly measured. Are you able to, and would you mind, posting a pic of the fish being mentioned.

I made a crude guesstimate and it comes out to about 13". Granted, the oscar me be towards the back of the tank.
I calculated as follows:
standard 180Gal aquarium - Length = 72"
Number of fish to cover length = 5.5
Thus, 72/5.5=13.09"

Just to reiterate. I am not doubting your stated size. I am genuinely interested in seeing a legitimately measured 14"+ oscar as I love these fish.

You’re right. I went with what the fish store owner said. I just measured and it’s a little over 13”.

I feel that every 14"+ oscar ever mentioned is just a proud owner really believing that their oscar must be that big but never measure accurately.
