Hi everyone I am a newb to this site. I had a couple of questions like. I have a 150gal tank with a mag 24 I am looking at about 5-6 foot of head. Would a 33 gal tank be enough for my sump. I have a drill bit for 1 3/4 in holes. How many 1 inch bulkheads should I put in the tank? What I am asking is what is the flow of a 1 in bulkhead. And as for my return should I bring that in from another 1 inch bulkhead and if so what kind of spraybar or return should I use for most circulation. I currently have 2 golden oscars and a cat. Oh and what would the placement be of the return and overflows should I do. Anyone that can help please do.. Thanks in advance..

My tank has 4 holes drilled ... 2 drains, 1 return and 1 also as a drain that is usually closed and is used for water changes (i.e. draining the water from the tank).

My return is just a pipe that returns the water just below the surface on the opposite side of the tank to the overflow/underflow.

The overflow/underflow occupies about 4" of the tank length on the one side and runs the width of the tank. It's kinda difficult to explain, but it's a neat system cos most of the water drained is sucked from the bottom of the tank, which keeps it very clean. Some water also overflows from the top and acts as a surface skimmer.

It is also in essence an overflow system, so in the event of a power outtage/hardware failure, my apartment (and wooden floor ) stays dry.

If you're interested in the overflow/underflow, I can try and get some pics later and post them..

Cheers

Just get a FX5 thats what I have on my 150 works great.

im also running a 150 with a sump and a cannister.
the sump gets its water via a pipe which goes through the bottom and is about .75" under the surface. Water falls straight down in the sump and gets pumped back halfway in the tank.
im not sure about drilling holes tho, mine was complete with holes and pipes and everything...

1700gph

A 33g tank will work fine, cleaning will depend on bio-load.

Pump will give you 1700gph, a good 10x turn-over rate.

I would say 4 overflows (to sump) & 2 returns (from pump)

Flow rate is typical of a coupler or elbow of the same internal diameter.

With 2 returns place one above the surface with a spray bay to break-up surface tension & promote gas exchange.

Place the 2nd one half way down the tank & split it to direct flow around the tank

hope this helps,

Dr Joe
