Started a DIY build a bit ago and thought I'd share the progress. It will be delayed 'til after the Holidays. But here is what I have so far (tank needs a little clean up, but letting it dry for now). Tank is 60"x26"x22". Stand is 2x4's and 2x6's with a sheet of 3/4 inch MDF board on top (solid as a rock and definitely overkill but wood is cheap and house is not). First build for me and I limited the tank size for now due to room size restraints, but wanted the experience for when I move to the next place and can build much bigger. It has been fun thus far and appreciate all the knowledge and experiences shared on this website. I will update again after the New Year and I buy the glass. I think 3/8's should be good (hope so, much cheaper than 1/2").

Nice looking, What wood did you use for the tank, and what sealant did you use?? Starting mine soon.

Subscribed and waiting...

I used 3/4" plywood and 1x3's for the front ($40). Painted it with West Marine two part epoxy (black($65)).

3/8" glass (58 1/2"x22")-$55
Wood for stand-$25 (so far; I have to finish it probably another $30)

So tank and stand will be a little over $200. Not too bad. :headbang2

I used one gallon...got three coats on it. Should do the job. I pick up the glass in two weeks, so not much movement in the mean time. I am using Marineland aquarium sealant for the job. About $15 for two tubes. That should be more than enough.

are the 1x3's on the front going to be strong enough to hold it or would it be better to use a solid piece of plywood with the window cut out?

The onex3's will be. I will add a brace once the glass is in. I have special ordered twice now and each has been cut wrong:screwy:. It is not fun liveong in smalltown USA and driving an hour each way only to have the wrong size again and again. Still trying though. Next order should be in next week some time. In the mean time, I bought a used restaurant tank about 165 gallons and built a stand. I am attaching pics. It is still a work in progress but posting anyway. So far there is a red devil (used initially to cycle tank, but seems to be getting along with new fish so may keep him), 2 altolamp comps, and a julie. Will get substrate in Wednesday and order some more fish after that. Basic setup for now, but I have been patiently waiting for my plywood build to come into fruition, but I WANT FISH! On a side note, has anybody ordered from LiveFishDirect.com? If so, what was your experience?
