hi as you can see im a newbie in here. im getting a new tank this week and i have some questions about set up and filtration. im aware of the goldenrule to do three x's the filtration per hour but what would you guys suggest as being the best/ most efficient/ maintenance wise etc. also interested in the decor, substrate. i have 2" black mexican beach pebbles in my 55g and not sure to do the same in the new tank or use gravel. which is easier to clean? i have never used gravel so im clueless. in the tank will be 3 dojo loaches, 3 kenyi, 3 gold labs, 2 plecos, 2 gold severums, and 2 tiger oscars. thanks in advance for all input and advice. ;)

The kenyis will eat the eyes out of the plecos inside of a week (or just plain kill it).

My experience with them was eating the eyes out of one pleco, then murdering it. And eating the eyes out of the second pleco. I traded him to my lfs after that (I rescued him from my sister-in-law who was going to flush him for various nefarious murders in her tank). In addition to the pleco savagery, he would constantly chase the other africans all day and night. I think he was responsible for two other mysterious deaths of yellow labs as well, but I don't have any paperwork to back that up, lol. He was a major stressor in the tank and I'm glad he's gone.

Don't get me wrong though. I didn't hate the fish, it was beautiful. I just hated the way it went on a killing spree (and chased and nipped non stop). My Kenyi was female. Maybe having more than one, as you do, channels their aggression more towards each other than other fish? I honestly don't know. But, after my experience with them, I wouldn't have another. I'm not neccessarily discouraging others to keep them, just letting you know their habits from my experiences.

The only fish he wouldn't mess with was my 6" yellow lab male. The kenyi was around 3". All the other africans were between 3" and 4". The two plecos were in excess of 8". In the right situation, I'm sure the Kenyi can be a rewarding fish to keep, just not my situation. :)

Let me be a little more specific. It was like chasing and biting was this Kenyi's job. Only, he was the type of guy who never clocked out and took his work home with him. He never called in sick and wouldn't use his vacation days. :D
