Hello everyone, I've been reading this forum for about a year now and this will be my first post. I have been maintaining a 30 gallon tank for a year now with no problems and decided to finally start up my 150 gallon tank for a pair of tiger oscars and a small school of silver dollars.
I'm writing this to ask if anyone sees anything that I'm missing or that may be a problem. I have a 150 gallon (48x24x30) that is going to be filtered by two sunsun 304b canister filters (rated at 525 gph). I have had one running on my thirty gallon tank for the last month which I primed with my bio filters from a hob filter that had been running for the last year (regular filter changes of course). I will be using a 300 watt titanium heater and want to add two filtered submersible pumps for circulation but have found conflicting information on what size would be adequate for my setup...any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My 30 gallon is constantly overstocked because my wife always thinks it looks too empty and randomly buys more community fish so I have become quite accustomed to twice weekly water changes of about 40% and weekly testing of my water parameters. My last question is what would be my best way of getting the 150 properly cycled. My plan is to fill my 150 about 3/4 and then move my already primed canister filter to the large tank and top the tank off with water removed from the 30 gallon. While the 150 is cycling I plan to put my new canister on my 30 gallon (it has two hob filters running also) and allow it to get a good biological filter established before moving it to the 150 as well. My question is with having a jump start on the bio filter, should I use any live fish to help the cycle? I understand that the biological filter needs the ammonia to stay alive and this is where I become unsure, I don't want to harm any fish...even goldfish while getting the 150 properly cycled. Any suggestions and advice would be appreciated. Thanks guys.
(One last question, do you think 2 tiger oscars and 5 silver dollars is a good stock for this tank? I know my wife is going to want to add more but I want my fish to be happy and healthy. If there is room for a couple more...any suggestions, maybe 2 jd or 2 convicts?) Thanks again.

You are on the right track... actually you should be able to take your filters off the 30 and put them on the new tank ...then add the current stock of the 30 &be ok...let it run a few days &you should be fully cycled for that stock...however ...you should probably add a big canister or an ac110 hob for more mechanical filtration. ... you probably shouldn't clean the filters before the move for at least a week before& after the move for about a month....you won't need to use old water (but you can) from the 30...good luck

nothing in old water but old water, use 100% clean water. that's a pretty tall tank, if you have not purchased it yet, think I would go for a 72" rather than a 48 for Oscars, larger foot print. make a hell of an angel tank.

Thanks for the replies.
First question, I have two canister filters rated at 525 gph five stage filtration (sponge, carbon, bio balls, ceramic rings and uv) that equals 1050 gph. Figuring in a loss of flow due to media and going up and back from the tank I would guess I'm still getting at least 500-600 true gph which would mean my tanks water supply should be cycled at least 3x an hour. Do you really think I need an hob as well? I figured with 2 canisters that I would never be without sufficient filtering even during cleaning...I know oscars are messy eaters and if I need more filtration I'll get it but I prefer canister over hob and would be willing to get another as they grow. I already have the tank...a Craigslist steal I couldn't pass up...$200 with stand, canopy, lights and undergravel filters (which I'm not using because I prefer sand.) I'll use all freshwater and just my prepared canister filter but will only be moving two tigers and four silver dollars into the tank and the rest of the stock will stay in the old tank...my daughter loves her fish and wouldn't be happy if the oscars start eating her mollies and tetras...they are safe for the time being.

You have enough filtration...& if you need flow you can try powerheads. ..I think i missed something in your original post...

Sounds like you have it all figured out. You should be good to go If you are looking for more circulation just get a couple water circulating pumps like Koralia They move a ton of water and super energy efficient

Thanks everyone. One last question...since you guys are a veritable cornucopia of information, can I get away with a couple more fish with my current setup and if so what would be the suggestions? I've red jds, convicts or possibly severs but don't want to overstock. Thanks again guys.

4 ft tank...you should stay away from extra cichlids. .. your oscars &sd's ...maybe a catfish that wont get more than 12 inches

This is my tank setup that I'm just waiting for my heater to show up before stocking, it's ready other than running a little on the cool side. I like a couple of the cory cats but don't think I have enough vegetation and coverage for them to be happy but I could be wrong...if I am please let me know. I also like a few of the sydonis catfish and was thinking they may work. Do either of these sound like a good match for my tank and if so how many...from what I've read it sounds like the cory cats would be better in a small school. The other option I'm considering is Raphael cats. I would be happy with any of these three but am unsure on how many. I appreciate all the knowledge on here and will be following whatever advice I receive here. Thanks in advance.
