Hello all,

I am going to be building my first house within the next couple years. I want to have a large concrete wall tank for some peacock bass and rays (15'x4'x4'). I am trying to figure out as many of the details as possible so that I can budget properly and know how to continue. I have several questions that I was hoping you guys could help me with. I have drawn a basic diagram of what I have been thinking of doing. I want to able to access the tank from the front and back. I plan to have overflows on both sides of the tank and to put media inside of them. I also plan to use a drip system on this tank. The drip system will come from well water. I plan to have a holding compartment on one of the sides of the tank to heat the water from the drip system before it enters the tank. When too much water accumulates in the tank it will leave through a pipe in the large sump under the tank and run into the yard.

1) Is concrete the a good insulator? I am not sure how to heat such a large tank, and I want to make sure that I am not losing too much heat through the concrete. I am pretty sure that I want the tank to be concrete because I want it to last many years and be durable.

2) Where should I place the heaters to get the best results and use the least energy?

3) Would you guys recommend using UV sterilizers as another source for filtration?

Thank you for any advice.

Using concrete shouldn't result in loss of heat. I would definitely use sterilizers. You can never go wrong with them. Just a little added filtration. That is alot of water to heat. I would look into a thermostat system or even a pool heater. You can get them for cheap off craigslist. Very nice diagram BTW

I was already leaning towards using sterilizers. A pool heater is a good idea that I haven't thought about. I will look into those. Thank you

I have a UV sterilizer on my 300 gallon.. They are awesome. Makes the water crystal clear.

My only advice is that the lower priced UV sterilizers tend not to last long.

I had two of them, each only lasted about a year.. Then I got an "Aqua UV" branded one. Wow, these things are expensive but built like a tank (and made in USA).. Great product, and I highly recommend them.
