Good looking stock! Where did you come across the Astyanax's?

You have such a unique stock of fish I always love seeing pics of your fish. Very nice.

Thanks. I got them at That Pet Place in Lancaster, PA. I've been looking for more, but can't find any astyanax sp. anywhere. I wish I could breed them, but I think they would need their own tank. I understand they are pretty easy, but I have never bred tetras before.

Yeah, I looked for some for a while but ended up just going with Buenos Aires Tetras.

Again, good looking stock. Is that syn male or female? Regardless of gender it's a great looking fish.

Thanks again :) The syn is male. He is like a tank that just plows through the other fish when he feels like it lol. I wish more astyanax sp. were more available in the hobby. The choice of larger dithers/targets for cichlids is so limited if you want a CA/SA themed tank. You either have to get small tetras (will be eaten by your cichlids) or large predators (might eat your cichlids). The only choice you really have for a schooling fish is silver dollars, which isn't a CA fish. BA tetras are very nice, and as close as you can really get. Most astyanax sp. get around 6'' in size. Now if you lived in Texas you could easily catch Mexican tetras. I wish they were available in the hobby.

Ah, I figured it was male. I'm currently growing one out that's a little under 4" and I'm thinking it may be female. I hear you about "biotope" correct dithers. I actually ditched my BA tetras and now have a colony of black Yucatan Mollies. I haven't lost any yet, although I can't say the same for their fry..

I also actually just picked up a young (4") robertsoni. Thinking it's male as it was the biggest and most dominant of the bunch. How does yours get along in the community?

It will take a while to know the sex of your syn. People on here and I thought mine was a female, but as the fish got over 10'' he really began to look male. Ventting is the best way to tell, and that confirmed that I have a male.
I have thought about mollies myself, but like you I worry about how they will fair with larger cichlids. I think you will be fine as long as you don't have large and very aggressive cichlids. If they are with the robertsonis than you will be ok.
Your largest robertsoni may be a male. It is very hard to sex them, and venting is the best way. The only way I knew mine was a female is that she laid eggs with no male present. She was very aggressive at that time, but is doing well in the community now. The only fish she gets aggressive with is the JD, but never causes any damage. I'd say they are pretty good in a semi-aggressive community.
