Hello MFK.

There seems to be no welcome area so I guess I will just hello here! HELLO! yeah I suck with hellos, sorry

I was hoping someone could give me some advice with stocking, I have been reading off this site a lot for my bigger setup, dam some the tanks I have seen glad I have a misses or I would be bankrupt by now!

My tank is 5x2x2 or 60x24x24 currently have 1 FX5 2nd is coming, not sure on anything else yet. I do have plans for a bigger 300G+ tank in the next 1 year So its mainly No one gets killed in the time being or you know something bad! Just waiting for my Discus tank to be setup then I can start on a well as you guys put it monster fish tank but after seeing some of these tanks its not very monster in my mind anymore lol Might go higher then 300G just 2nd floor house not sure dont want it falling down and killing someone sleeping....2nd hand free fish room hmm...jokes! Cement floor so might be ok anyways sorry back to the stocking!

My plans are

- Jaguar

- Mida or Red devil not sure just the color I love and the hump

- Green terror or Red terror for color both maybe?

-Black Belt

- Severum? too weak to stand up for its self?

- Oscar

- Teaxs

-Something with a bit of color not very sure

- Clown loachs or plecos for the Bottom?

Like I stated my main worry will be aggersion why they grow up in the 150G until the bigger comes for most likely the Jag n mida and maybe BB, All depends on the temperament of the cichlids as everyone is different and its not very easy to judge but overall would it work for a year tops?

Thanks guys sorry for dropping the hard Q on you guys! :(

welcome

I know what you mean about tank size... even my 240 doesnt seem big compared to others here

wouldnt suggest the severum or oscar for what you have planned (anything is possible, but the fish you mentioned are on a whole different level of agression then those two species)

if you like the "hump" go with a Midas

red terror(festae) and false red terror(mayan) are both big and agressive fish that could work
Im growing out both right now actually

you may want to look into some Vieja as well

as in most cases buy a number of each if possible and let them grow together
then pick the ones that are the nicest and the most suitable to how you want your tank

good luck and keep us posted :)

Well I have some of those fish in my 125 for the moment and they are doing okay. Check my signature. If it were me I would stay away from the red terror as I have heard they are pretty aggressive, but as said it could work. I agree with Zeester, I wouldn't try the severum and oscar. They could hang with the GT more than likely but I don't think they would be worth chancing with the rest the stock. I would try a jag, a GT, a midas, a texas, and at least 5 loaches as they look sweet schooling. I had 3 in my 125 at one point and wished I had more. 5-7 loaches would look sweet! These are my thoughts anyway. Good luck!

2 or 3 of the fish you are proposing will fill your tank at adult size and even a 300 might not be enough to keep them all. I currently keep a Midas, jD, Freddy and a Festae in a 300 and it's almost not enough space. I had a few other cichlids( green terror, firemouth, con) that had to be removed.

I know it's not really in the spirit of MFK since everyone likes to push stocking levels, but your list probably won't work long term. Start with a group of smaller fish and weed out the problem fish as you go. Space means alot so you may have to get rid of few till you find a balance that works.

Welcome to the forums and good luck!

Thanks Guys! I am mainly looking over this video and they all seem happy [YT]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DphvI2Go474&feature=related[/YT]

Just wish he posted his tank details! Well I think I might go talk to the tank supplier today and see how much a 500G will set me back or and 8x2x2 that should be enough correct? well if I get nice tempered fish!

I agree with the servurm! I have never seen a very stand up one, as for the Oscar there is one I have in mind...his at the LFS and he is always bashing up the black belt, maybe he could stand his own ground? maybe not a good idea :S

So if I went with everything but the servurm how much long do you think I would have to wait for my 500G? I imagine it will take the shop 1 -2 months then I can move the jag mida RT and maybe the texas over and restock the other tank with oscars and servurms

Thanks ! I will post back when I get details on the Tank and finish work!

you can do anything you want in a tank that size

still wouldnt add the oscar for what youre trying to do though

theyre amazing fish and one of my favs but... he wont hang with the fish youre looking at in the long run

if you want sevs and oscars... put them in a diff tank then the killers you have listed
they simply wont survive long term with the fish you have planned

just saw a 300 filled with vieja and paratheraps. prolly 30 cichlids in there all medium sized and the tank was gorgeous and looked like a beautiful school of fish. so the right combo and you have lots of possibilities. you can always throw them into the tank as juvies and as they grow you can adjust and remove as they get bigger. good luck

Yes difinately oscar is out of the question. The jag or festae would end up killing it or stressing it so bad that it could bring on an ick outbreak. Who needs that? The midas could end up running the tank, bigger the tank the better though, Just the way it is with the take no prisoners bruiser cichlids. I kinda of got sick of fish deaths so I setup my 75 with geophagus and they still fight and they are wimps compared to your stock.

Thanks for the help guys! went to the my tank builder and he can do a 96x36x36 for a good price well I think it is the misses is already trying to cut my neck ikkeee D: Just need to figure out where to put it, the guy looked at me weird a few times when I said it has to go on the second floor! Might get a contractor out to look at the floor but seeing as we have cement flooring with carpet and cement walls which are about 5 - 8 inchs thick and the ground is maybe 6-10 inchs thick ruffly hard to see but I think it would support it the marble pool table is still standing!

Anyways going to go with a jag,Mida or Red devil, GT, RT ( I can have both aye?) and a texas or 2 for some color! thinking maybe a flower horn. then the bottom guys just a few clowns!

going to check out the growth rate of the fish now not sure how fast some grow, If they wont out grow the tank in 2-4 months I might start sourcing them but 1st I want to make sure I can get a tank that big up the darn stair case into the sun room! I hope the sun wont disturb the fish too much :(

Then later Oscar with servurms n a JD in the old 150G, Also considering soureing a 2nd hand 75Gx2 encase any fish try to kill someone!

I hope it works out D: Thanks for the help guys!
