150g planted tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Welcome to MKF,

To help you we really need some more info on your tank. Could you give some more info about the tank, like filtration, lightning, what do you use as substrate, co2 or not, is it in direct sunlight etc. etc.

hi Peacock Bass, :welcome:

my tank with an overrun of moss is a 29g that has:
-one(1) 30g size whisper power filter(hang on)
-the lighting is made just for plant growth(i don't know who makes it), but is left on most of the day
-the substrate is just gravel
-it had this wierd box type thing for co2 but it didn't work to well so i took it out(i still have it)
-and if we'd open the blines it would get sun in the afternoon

now for my 150g, it's not setup yet so this is just what i'm looking at:
-one(1)Eheim professional II(model 2128)w/ thermofilter
-more lights that's made for plants of some kind
-the substrate would be a mix of sand for playgrounds and sandboxes and some gravel
-i don't know what i'll use for co2 so if you can give me some thing good that'll be great
-and last(but not least) the tank would be in no sunlight what-so-ever

Thanks,
Corban :D

try Drfostersmith.com there good i order from them periodically

If i were you i would consider building my own diy CO2 unit, they are very easy to make just have a look at some of the previous threads. As for your lights i would recommend some of about 6500k, i would run 2 of them minimum.

OK if somebody can give me a good co2 system that is easy to find (maybe a site wher I can get it) I think I’ll be fine :)

Howdy,

Honestly, I would try without CO2. I've had it before on my 80 gal tank. It was a profesisonal set-up combination Dennerle/Dupla, and it didn't really help all that much. Only few highly demanding species need it. I may almost say it didn't do anything for me. Choose your plants wisely and get good lighting, use substrate fertilizer and you should be all set.

Regarding your lighting, you need to be careful with your choices. You only mention "for plants". Oftentimes, those are purple lights that also greatly promote algae growth. They enterd the market in the 70s as plant lights, but they are long outdated. Check what brand and type they are and let us know. Also, they need to be replaced about every year. What total wattage do you have? Furthermore, the lighting period should be 12-14h, best controlled by a timer. I'm just saying that because you mentioned it "is left on most of the day". Use a timer to help your plants. ;)

Since you plan a tank with local fish, I suggest to also use local plants. Take a rake or shovel with you when you get your fish, or snorkel some in the Summer and dive for plants.

Good luck,
HarleyK
