Im going to be buying a 150gallon tall fish tank in the next month or so and was debating a CA/SA cichlid setup. My original intention was to do a planted discus tank, but a CA/SA set up could be just as nice and a lot cheaper. I thought I would check to see what people had to say about fish I liked and any suggestions they have themselves. 150g tall dimensions=4'x2'x31". And do you think I would be able to pull off anubias tied to driftwood and maybe a floating plant with these guys?

Possible Occupants:
Midas
Green Terror
Oscar
Argentea
Red Texas
Carpintis
Red Tiger Mota
Festae
Rhino pleco
Papa pleco
Any good suggests you may have

Red Texas Show tank!

1 Red texas

5 Silver dollars

And some clown loaches to clean up the mess.

How bout a royal pleco?

Or you can do the same set up with a female Festae.

Out of your list, the following would be safe & relatively equal setups (or any combo of the fish in stated lists) based on aggression although Id personally leave the red texas out...its usually not a good community type fish, although Ive had the exact stock in the first list and it was ok for about a year:

List 1

Midas
Red Texas
Carpintis
Red Tiger Mota
Festae
any small growing pleco
any small growing catfish

List 2

Green Terror
Carpintis
Oscar
Argentea
any small growing pleco
any small growing catfish

Id stay away from large growing dithers unless you were only wanting 2 to 3 cichlids max. They will be vying for territory and a cichlid will ALWAYS win.

The 4x2 footprint isnt really big enough to house a lot of cichlids. They require (or prefer for territorys sake) larger footprints and less height. Cichlids are middle to middle bottom dwellers and dont often stay at the top of the tank.

Good Luck!

Thanks, for the input guys only thing on the footprint comment. I would consider doing a six foot tank but the only other option will be a standard 125g. As the reason Im stuck with these two options is that my parents are footing part of the bill to get a new full setup. They don't want me messing with used tanks, as thats how this started. Do you think the extra two feet in length would make up for the loss in gallons?

I think that the stock list I provided would stay about the same, youd just have a better chance of success for a long term setup. If the choice is a 150 tall (4ft) or a 125 (6ft), Id take the 125 all day long. You have a lot more territory space and its WAY easier to do maintenance on than a 31 inch high tank (unless youre 6'4"+). I have a31" high tank now and have to use a step stool or chair to get to the bottom of the inside.

Youd get WAY more tank for the $$$ if you can find a used one. As long as Ive been doing this, I can only think of once or twice that Ive bought a tank new...and NEVER had a single issue with a used tank I purchased. You can get 3-4 times the tank for the same money youd pay for a new one, enabling you to get quality accessories with the extra $$ you save.

Just go on your local craigslist and type in aquarium in the for sale section.

I appreciate the help, ya I found a killer custom corner tank around 130gallons on cl. But could not convince the parents and that killed that venue for tanks, at least for the next few years until I move out lol.

You could go with a 5x2x2 that adds alittle length and I don't think they are to hard to find we have a 160 that is 3x2x 42 but I don't know how we will ever decorate the thing. As for the list go for color
Electric blue jack dempsey
firemouth
green terror
esondido texas
Fish like that and let them grow up together.

If your only two options are 150 tall or 125, go 125 6ft over 4 every time unless I was doing Discus or Angles.
