I'm looking at a 150 gallon tank for chiristmas. My mom said she would probably ge tit for me. I wanted to use it for and aro and amybe 2 Pbass untill they out grow it. I was wondering what kind of filtration should i use for it. Diesel said he uses a 50 gallon sump. Would that be best? And if so how to sumps work?

Sump is an excellent decision in my opinion... It would be best if your mom and you could find a Drilled one... That will make the sump install 1000 times easier :)

This is one basic design.. There are many different kinds and anywhere from Store bought to DIY sumps.. This is just a design to show the basic circulation flow of a sump :)

The water goes into the drain with all the crap that floats around ... drops down in and through your filter media and then passes through the next chamber or so til it reaches the chamber where you have your return pump. Which returns the filtered water back to the tank via pipe to pipe to tank or pipe to spray bar to tank :) Look good??

Anyone disagree... This is just a simple picture.. And description.. Hope it helps..

Hi REDKID!!!

What's your skill level?

Have you ever been known to hurt yourself with an UNplugged power tool? :D

If you buy a 55g tank (or tub) you just have to cut & silicone in a couple of baffles and maybe shelf brackets. You'll need bulkhead connectors for however many holes you have drilled in the tank (one at each end for overflow, one in the center for return, all at water level, all on back glass).

Give a good read to the DIY section here, there is an incredible amount of info there.

Then if you have specific questions you can direct us to that post for futher explaination.

Most everyone here is happy to help (especially someone who has done his homework).

Good Luck,

Dr Joe
