hi i have a 150 gallon.. and one rena xp3 . im going with fresh water .not sure off what kind off fish but i plan to put as much off a variety as my tank will accept .now ive heard that one xp3 is all i need .. then ive heard that i need at least one more . im new to this and want to set this up in the best way so that i have the least amount off maintence .i know they are alot off work . do i need another filter or something else .. help. i need education

ive got a 125 with a emperor 400 and an xp3 on it all i ever have to do is water changes and gravel vacs. I would think an extra 25 gallons wouldnt be a problem for that filtration. and the emps are pretty cheap. google and searching this forum will help you a lot. questions like this come up all the time so you may not get someone wanting to repeat themselves for the 100th time. goodluck

The # of canister filters you need will depend on your what type of fish you want to keep and # of fish. The more fish in the tank the more is filtration is needed. If this is your first 100+ fish tank then you'll make sure the tank is level so you would not worry about it leaking or exploding on your later on. Before adding fish and water, the first thing is make sure the aquarium is level evenly on the stand by using a leveler to measure it. Now to get back to your question, you have a few options to setup filters. They all work and each setups has it own advantages/disadvantages.

1 canisters and two Hang on the Back fitlers such as AC500 or Emperor 400
2 canisters and 1 Hang on the Back filter.

first of all, welcome to MFK. If you set up the XP3 the right way it will handle the bioload of your 150g. You will however would want to add a couple of HOB filters to take care of the mechanical filtration. I run the xp3 and two AC110s on my heavily stocked 180g and always have clear clean water.

What fish are you planning to stock in your 150g?

i live on a lake and got this from my dad who is a fisherman . he wants me to put blue gill , pearch and such . from what ive been told the are way too dirty . i have this on a stand in witch i welded together , than is perfectly square . ive beefed up my floor joists .but what i need to know is how to properly filter a tank this size . because what i plan on doing next is encaising this in oak , adding doors.. areas for the equipment . but my problem is i dont know what i need .for filteration. i really dont want things that hang on the tank , i want to put crown molding around the top and a bio wheel would really be in the way , but i want to do this right or im waistng alot off money and time . thanks chad

Welcome.
Native fishes i.e. bluegill, perch, crappie, etc. are no more dirty than big south americans.
They key has already been stated.
What you need for filtration depends on the size, type, and quantity of fish you plan to keep in a given amount of water.
Until that is known, you will get tons of differing responses.
