I know it's more important to have a large foot print tank for CA/SA cichlids, so I just wanted to see if there was anybody out there that owned a 170g (72"x18"x30"). There's a chance I may be able to buy one from a friend (previously salt water tank) but I'm thinking the foot print may be too small and I should just maybe get a 180g (72"x24"x24").

Anyone out there that owns a 170g CA/SA cichlid tank wish they maybe bumped up to the 180g due to more foot print? I plan to keep a few 5"+ cichlids in the tank along w/ dither fish.

I would go for the 180 as well. The additional 6" of width makes a big difference when it comes to keeping CA's.

I agree get the 180 foot print is more important than depth

180 is better for any cA cichlid!

Thanks everybody! I know I was thinking on the right path but I guess I needed fellow MFKers for verification.

If you're not keeping real monster 1'+ cichlids the 170 will be fine. I have one and like it. It's true the 180 is probably a better choice because of the footprint, and if the price is comparable of course go with the 180...but if you're getting the 170 from a buddy I assume you're getting somewhat of a deal, if so I'd take the 170.

I agree with CTU2fan...if you are getting a really good deal, go with the 170.
