I've only had fish in my 55 for 4 days now, and the social structure has changed drastically in this short amount of time. One fish in particular, who looks a lot like my pseudotropheus acei's, was friendly with everyone in the tank for the first 3 and a half days. He actually used to school with the acei but now he chases them and nips them every chance he gets. Weird! And he's always flaring his dorsal fin now, showing full colors. Is this a dominance display? Because really the dominant fish in my tank is a melanochromis johanii, and he still won't mess with him. He goes after all the fish BUT the johanii, actually. Am I going to continue to see more changes like this for awhile?

from what i know, if the fish has extremely bright colors AND is very dominant, then they are the dominant, they have become the dominant male

the dominant male could change at any moment. Does the acei hang out and flare up on the opposite side from the johannii? The acei could be sub-dominant and has claimed a territory also.

this is typical behavior when moving africans. they will try to re-establish a new pecking order. once it is established, the aggression should taper off. the dominant will usually be the most colorful in the tank. also there is usually more aggression within species.

Actually sometimes it seems like the Johannii has claimed the whole tank, to be honest! And this other fish just seems to have claimed one small area under a rock at the edge of the tank.
