ok so i got a fx5 on a 180 gallon gunna add a rena xp4 well i save up for another fx5 wat would be the best way to set them up media wise and will this be enuff filtration for my tank any ideas thanks

Just follow the manufacturer directions. They will work just fine.

Oh, and pass on the carbon and all the other fancy chemicals you don't need.

I think there are plenty of people on here that think carbon is not needed. I do believe that it serves some purpose, but as long as youre tank is cycled and you're not using meds, just leave it out and put some bio media in it's place. Honestly, that should be sufficient filtration and I if I were you, I would just load the xp4 as full of bio media as you can and just let it be. Use the Fx5 for your polishing filter. I have my 150 set up the same way and its perfect.

Yea ditch the chemical. You don't need carbon in your tank, all it does it leech back into your water after a few weeks of use. Worthless in most situations. Yea the xp and fx will be fine on the 180.

i dont think carbon will leech off chemicals as much as it would stop working effectively. Carbon has a certain volume of impurities it is able to collect, onces its topped off, it simply stops working. Hence the month long life span. Chemical filtration like carbon, ammonia resins, and phosphate removers are good for an overnight fix after slacking on maintenance. Other than that, its not cost effective or necessary to use all the time. I would personally load up on lots of biological filtration. And if you have the budget to get another fx5, DO IT!
