I bought a 180 gallon salt water tank and want to block off the holes on the bottom where the sump was so i can turn it into a fresh water tank,i just bought a FX 5 filter for it today so i am going to use that so i need some advice on what is the best thing to block the holes long term and where could i get the materials.

I had a bad experience covering them with 2 pieces of glass and using alot of silicon, eventually started leaking BAD a few months down the line, so stay away from that

i was just reading about doing that but i also was reading about using bulkheads to block it off

I've used bulkheads to block off holes in the side of a tank without issue. I don't see why you couldn't on the bottom panel... I'm asuming a glass tank that doesn't need full bottom support.

Same, used them for the sides of a tank but not on the bottom. I don't know if the weight of the substrate would be an issue or not?

I have several tanks with the bottom drains patched with glass and silicone, no problems. You could use bulkheads too.

Why not run a Sump on the FW? I'm assuming that their are at least 4 holes in the bottom of the tank because of it's size. Use 2 of the holes for a sump and 2 for the FX5. Best of both world IMHO.

I agree with using a sump for that tank, or at the very least plumb the bulkheads in so you can add a sump later without tearing the whole tank down. Just put a valve on each bulkhead to block them off for now. Works great for water changes too.

One FX5 is going to be very marginal filtration for a tank of that size and you could add a sump for less than the cost of another FX5.
