im getting ready to upgrade to a 180 in a couple of weeks and I have a question on the height of the stand. I guess its a personal preference. I was looking up stands that tank manufactures make and most of them are 30" but personally my 120 is on a 30" and it seems kind of low. since I have all eartheaters im mainly focused on the bottom of the tank. I guess some people make them higher for space for filters and sumps. but I have an fx5 and xp3 so I only need about 24" of space underneath the tank. so if I build the tank like shown in this video [YT]jN4Y9AYuwcQ[/YT] made by UaruJoey could I make the stand around 36" high or would it become to unstable.

I don't know about 36 inches, but I made mine 30 inches high. I guess if you put enough supports in you should be fine. Good luck with the build

Think about how much time you'd like to spend in front of your tank and whether you'll be sitting or standing. Sitting on a couch looking up into a tank on a 36" high stand is far from ideal, my stand is only 400mm high (plus ~40mm of poly/ply) and is a great height for viewing while seated. However if you want to fit filters etc into your stand you'll need it a bit taller.

thanks I rigged up a little mock stand and tank and I made it 34" I mainly stand but when Im in my bed it is still at a good height

not to hijack, but is that urajoys's stand a good build, I have a 6ft 180 and the stand it came with, well I wouldn't even set the tank on it empty, let alone filled. It is an accident waiting to happen anyway, his crap stand was to high and I couldn't reach the bottem. So what is a good height for a stand for a tank like that.

the stand is defiantly strong enough to hold a 180 gallon tank. did the stand you get have a center support similar to the ones in the corner? and I wouldn't go any higher than 36" without attaching it to a wall or something just because the higher the stand is the less stable it will be

I built one for my 210 and built it about 4-5 inches shorter than a standard stand.

Same footprint as a 180. The added height would be alright but my 300 is 35" high but its a hallway tank. We only sit to warch it from our bars tools in the kitchen. 36" is pretty tall.
