As some of you may know I was attempting to get a 240 gallon tank brand new from my area. I checked multiple places and I could either not get the tank or it was going to cost the big bucks. So, I decided to go with a 180. Anyway I currently have a Cascade 1500 Canister filter running on my 130 gallon, and I just ordered a Fluval FX5. What im getting to is this...what would be the best way to set up the 180 filteration wise using these two filters? I do not have much experience in filteration and any help would be appreciated! I just want to get the most I can out of these two filters.

I would get a wet/dry:)

if you're sticking with the canisters, go with one on each end.

i might go with a wet dry in the future but not yet...so yeah ill just put one canister on each end. thanks rally

I agree with rally.
put a canister on each side

Also...the cascade 1500 is in a 130 gallon right now (my current tank). My parents dont really understand the point of setting up the 180 gallon and letting it cycle...they expect me to fill it up and put the fish in. That way the 130 can get put away. So my question is, when I set up the 180, if I hook the cascade up to it do I avoid having to cycle? I will also use the tank water from the 130, as well as the gravel etc. Everything will be moved from the one tank to the next. Also...do I wait on hooking up the FX5 or can I do that straight away as well? Or is there simply no way to do it, and I have to give the 180 time to cycle?

I do this all the time. As long as your bio load is not increasing from 1 tank to the other you can move the filter, fill it with temperature matched water, start the filter and add the fish. Another thing you might consider is buying a big sponge filter to establish in your 130 and move it along with the cascade to the 180.

Keep a close eye on the water parameters, but I've never had a problem doing it this way. When (if) you go to add more fish, do so slowly to allow your filter to catch up. There will be a period where the FX5 will establish, but your cascade will keep up if you have the same number of fish IME.

Cascade is an ok canister filter. I had the 1500 and got rid of it. In the future, if money allows replace it with an Eheim 2078 or 2028. FX5 for mechanical and Eheim for Bio.
