realistically how many clown loaches can I fit comfortably in an 180 (6x2x2)? Tankmate will be a pleco and a datnoid.

Considering the recommended aquarium size for them on LiveAquaria.com is 100 gallons, I would say you could comfortably have 6-10 in there, with a pleco and a datnoid.

I'd think you need to cover more for dats, most of the dat keepers doesn't just keep one...

30-40 clowns would be fine.

Can include some more datnoids too. No issues if you are maintaining w/c with regularity. Here's a vid when there was 40+ clowns in a tank of similar size to your 180. Most of them were in the driftwood wall. Other vids are in my signature as well.

Great looking clown loaches

For the op, IMHO 15-20. You may want other fish at some point...

I started with 10 at approx 1.25 inches. 4 didn't make it ~ they never gained weight. It happens sometimes if you're getting them really small. That was about a year ago. The remaining six are super active and really chubby. I love my clown loaches :) When you get them please post pics.
