I’m setting up a 180G frontosa colony with 15 frontosa and 10 clown loaches.

would 3 sponge filters be enough to keep the tank working well or will I need a couple of FX6?

If the sponge filters are large enough, absolutely. No need for a couple of FX6. Personally I'd also have two internal filters filled with some really good biomedia (just because, why not) specifically for more lateral water circulation.

Sponge filters are fine. I mix box filters (lots of air and frequently-changed fluff over bio-media) and sponges (low flow) to address mechanical + bio-filtration. Better yet would be a Poret wall and air-driven jet-lifters.

Not sure I'd mix Fronts and clown loaches, though, as the Fronts will try to eat the clowns and could die trying.

Depending on the size of the loaches. Clown Loaches can hold their own against bigger fish specially Frontosas. My bigger clown loaches were harassing 10”
+ males to the point I had to separate the loaches from the Frontosa.

Thanks everyone,

just got back from the LFS and got a good deal on the tank with 2 fx6 so went with that. Comes Monday 🙌🙌🙌🙌
