Hi, One of my dads friends has a 180 gallon with stand it and is drilled for a sump ( I think ). My dad told him he would pick it up this weekend for 200 O.O. So I have a few questions regarding the sump. How large would the sump have to be for a tank this large. Also the heater i was thinking a 500 watt is that sufficient? Also has anybody heard of catalina brand heaters because i saw one on ebay for 59.99 with a 1100 gph pump. Thanks

Tank dimensions are

6x2x2 ( measurments are in ft )

Can't comment on the sump question because I don't use one, but I can offer advice on heaters.

Don't use one big heater in your tank, use two or three smaller ones. I run three 300 watt heaters on my 180 (two inline, one in the tank.)

sump volume is up to you, the min. size would be enough to hold the extra water in the event of a power out and contain the equipment you want and then there is no maximum size for a sump, there are some reef guys with more gallons in sump volume than the display tank the sump is filtering. i'd use the largest sump you can fit just because it adds more gallons for added stability and has more room for addional filters, heaters, a refugium and could be used to house fish that need to separated.
